Indian River State College

IRSC is a comprehensive, open-access institution offering career training, certificate programs, 20+ associate degrees, and 15 baccalaureate degree programs. The College’s 2022-2023 FTE is 10,368 students, with 3,032 first-time-in-college (FTIC) students. 

Dean, Learning Resources: 2020-Present

(This administrative position began as Administrative Director of Library Services in 2020, with additional departments added to the scope in subsequent years)

Manages the Learning Resources Division budget and staffing; which includes:

IRSC Libraries ($1.1 million annual budget)

Five campus libraries/collections, which include two locations run by IRSC, two county/college partnership branches, and one library collection. Faculty librarians provide information literacy, digital literacy, early literacy, and health literacy programming/instruction on all campuses and online. Professional staff and work study students provide circulation, interlibrary loan, and collection management tasks.

  • 5 full-time, continuing contract-earning faculty librarians
  • 6 full-time library professional staff
  • 4 part-time library staff
  • 3 Federal work study students

IRSC Tutoring Centers ($1.6 million annual budget)

Five campus tutoring centers and virtual tutoring for all IRSC students and local high school students.

Employees:

  • 7 full-time tutoring professional staff
  • 90+ part time tutors, including peer and credentialed tutors

IRSC Online ($1.5 million annual budget) 

The College’s instructional design team provides faculty support through course design and development, LMS training, and administration of Simple Syllabus. The Online team is currently leading the College’s search for a new Learning Management System (LMS)

Specific Duties and Position Highlights:

  • Co-Chair of IRSC’s QEP Implementation Team for Helping All Students Succeed, which seeks to promote a sense of belonging and to increase student help-seeking behaviors in gateway courses by centralizing resources. Manages the QEP/Title V Director. 
  • Works closely with library resource vendors and statewide consortia staff to select and purchase databases and collections. 
  • Serves as a member of the Provost’s leadership team and the College’s strategic planning and budgeting workgroup, which sets priorities for college-wide initiatives that focus on increasing student retention and completion. 
  • Sets division and department goals and assesses progress each academic year.
  • Works closely with all student success and academic divisions to promote student access to learning resources and to identify areas of improvement. 
  • Partners with all county library systems in the College’s service areas (St. Lucie, Indian River, Martin, and Okeechobee) through interlocal agreements, training, and other collaborative activities. 
  • Provides support to faculty librarians in earning continuing contract, the state college’s version of tenure.  
  • Secured the permanent loan of TCPalm’s archival newspaper collection (1,200 bound volumes), now housed in IRSC’s Miley Library. 
  • Project Director for the NEH Humanities Initiatives at Community Colleges project Infusing African American Culture into the Digital Learning Space, 2020-2023.
  • Provides library resource documentation for all program accreditations.
  • Provides strategic leadership for all Learning Resources departments, with a focus on increasing access to instructional and support services
  • Serves on numerous collegewide committees to represent library and tutoring services. 

Library Services Department Chair: 2019-2020

  • Scheduled non-credit information literacy instruction sessions at five campus locations. 
  • Gave presentations on library services and information literacy instruction to students, faculty, staff, and community members. 

Emerging Technologies Librarian/Assistant Professor: 2012-2020

  • Provided access and reference assistance to students and faculty through a variety of delivery methods.
  • Assisted in the management of IRSC’s instance of Islandora, an institutional repository and digital archive. Works with students to select, describe, and digitize items from the college archives and the community. 
  • Taught credit and non-credit instruction sessions that introduce students to current research techniques using library resources. Learning outcomes success rate was 86% for credit courses, and approval rating for non-credit instruction was 97%.
  • Assisted in collection development, planning, and other reference team shared responsibilities.
  • Created instructional content and works to facilitate online education through the Virtual College using current and emerging technologies.
  • Spearheaded the development of a Digital Literacy Lab through an IMLS Sparks! Ignition grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (2013), focused on mobile apps and their place in the active learning environment.
  • Planned and executed One Book, One College programming as part of the library faculty team. 
  • Worked as part of the library team to write and execute grant-funded projects, including the NEA Big Read, awarded for the 2016-2017 grant period, and the 2013 IMLS Sparks! Ignition grant, focused on mobile apps and their place in the active learning environment.
